Some States push for abolition, others hope for expansion

While some states push for abolition, others hope for expansion of
the death penalty
Mar 20, 2009
States considering repeal of the death penalty are getting a lot of
attention these days, but Stateline.org does a great job pointing out
that other states are trying to expand the use of capital punishment.

Some Alaskan leaders, including Gov. Sarah Palin, are trying to
implement the death penalty for the first time since statehood; some
Georgia legislators are pushing to allow death sentences even without
unanimous agreement from jurors; Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman and
others are hoping to get lethal injection approved after the electric
chair was declared unconstitutional by the state supreme court; and
Virginia politicians are attempting to allow execution of those who
assist in a murder but don't personally carry it out.
